Testing Services Include:
(Click on the buttons below for a full listing of capabilities)
 | Preliminary Observations
- Identifies macro sources of coolant contamination and degradation
- Color and appearance in a visual check
- Precipitate inspection for particulate contamination
|
 | Water Content (ASTM D1123) The Karl Fischer Reagent Method tests the water present in new or unused glycol-based coolant concentrates using a manual or an automatic coulometric titrator procedure. |
 | Glycol Percentage (ASTM E202) Indicates the type and percentage of glycol in the coolant. In most applications, a concentrate of 50/50 (glycol/water) is acceptable. When prolonged ambient temperatures are below -35°C, a 60/40 mixture is recommended. |
 | Specific Gravity (ASTM D1122) This test method covers the determination of the relative density of engine coolant concentrates and engine coolants. |
 | Specific Gravity (ASTM D4052) This test method covers the determination of the density, relative density, and API Gravity of petroleum distillates and viscous oils that can be handled in a normal fashion as liquids at the temperature of test, utilizing either manual or automated sample injection equipment. |
 | Reserve Alkalinity (ASTM D1121) This test method covers the determination of the reserve alkalinity of new, unused engine coolants, and liquid antirusts as received, of used or unused aqueous dilutions of the concentrated materials, and of aqueous dilutions of solid antirusts. |
 | Foaming Tendencies (ASTM D1881) This test method covers a simple glassware test for evaluating the tendency of engine coolants to foam under laboratory-controlled-conditions of aeration and temperature. |
 | Freeze Point (ASTM D3321) A refractometer is used to determine the approximate freezing protection provided by ethylene and propylene glycol-based coolant solutions as used in engine cooling systems and special applications. |
 | Freeze Point (ASTM 6660) This test method covers the determination of the freezing point of an aqueous engine coolant solution by automatic phase transition method. |
 | pH (ASTM D1287) This test method covers the determination of the pH of unused engine coolants and antirusts, and used or unused aqueous dilutions of the concentrated products. |
 | Ion Chromatography (ASTM 5827) This test method covers the determination of chloride ion in engine coolants and other engine coolant solutions by ion chromatography. Tests inhibitors such as, but not limited to, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, molybdates. Tests contaminates including glycol degradation, poor water quality and other sources of contamination. |
 | Metal Content (ASTM D6130) This test method covers the determination of silicon in engine coolant by using a Microwave Plasma–Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP-AES). This test method is applicable to the determination of dissolved or dispersed elements. Tests inhibitors including, but not limited to, corrosion metals and contamination. |
 | Glassware Corrosion Test (ASTM D1384) Multi-metal corrosion test for copper, brass, solder, aluminum, steel, cast iron and cast aluminum. |
 | Corrosion Protection of Heat
Rejecting Surfaces (ASTM D4340) This test method covers a laboratory screening procedure for evaluating the effectiveness of engine coolants in combating corrosion of aluminum casting alloys under heat-transfer conditions that may be present in aluminum cylinder head engines. |
 | High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) This test method checks for inhibitor levels as well as potential contamination. |
