KOST® USA Propylene Glycol Fluids
KOST USA Propylene Glycol Fluids are essentially colorless, low odor stable liquids completely miscible in water at all ratios and in some organic solvents. They are viscous, have low vapor pressures and low toxicity. The difference in their application is dependant mainly to variations in physical properties. These properties include viscosity, hygroscopicity and boiling point. Propylene Glycol (PG) and Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) are produced in a two-stage process. The first Stage is a reaction of water with Propylene Oxide (PO) to manufacture a mixture of PG and DPG. This mixture is then distilled and purified into its separate components.Propylene Glycol Fluids are widely used in industry because of their low vapor pressure, freeze point depression, lubricating, hygroscopicity, solvent properties, low toxicity, and plasticising. Their ease of reaction due to their alcohol groups make them popular chemical intermediates in the formation of many products.
Propylene Glycol (PG) – Industrial is by far the largest volume in the propylene glycol product line. It is used in a variety of products such as paints and coatings, detergents, coolants and antifreezes, and resins.
Dipropylene Glycol (DPG) – Industrial is an important chemical intermediate and coupling agent in the manufacturing of resins, urethane polyols, cosmetics, and plasticisers. It is also used as a humectant and is used in the same fields as EG. It also can serve as a natural gas dehydration agent.
Propylene Glycol (PG) – USP is similar to its industrial counterpart. However, how it is handled and packaging allows for USP, FDA, and FCC approval applications. These approvals allow for use in the tobacco, food, pharmaceutical, animal feed, cosmetic and personal care industries.
